ASTRA MEETING SCHEDULE for 2009

ASTRA Regular Meetings are on the 2nd Friday of the month, 7:00 P.M. (except for August)
  Due to renovations at the Planetarium, ASTRA meetings will start at 7:00 PM at Ocean County College in the College Center Solar Lounge Building #15 on the campus map

7:00 PM “Welcome” message
   Start the "Kid Zone" fun activities for the young at hart.
   Request for Announcements
   Reminder of what the next meeting will be on
   Request for Committee reports
   Request if anyone needs astronomical help. If easy, given now; 
    or will be put off till the end of the meeting or the next meeting.
7:45 PM Refreshment break
8:00 PM Main program
9:30 PM Meeting end
 a. Refreshments, if any remain.
 b. Astronomical help, if still needed.
 c. Social meeting and/or observing for all that want to stay. 
10:00PM Must leave, to close.




January 9th 2009 -Telescope Workshop- Starts at 7:00pm open to anyone who has a telescope and needs help to put it together, or how to use it. Bring the family, telescope and all the parts you want help with.

February 13th - The Near Side Mega-basin of the Moon Presented by Charlie Byrne a member of STAR
Talking about meteoroid impacts on the Moon.  He also has a book “The Far Side of the Moon”, Springer, 2008

Also John Endreson will give a brief presentation and handout information about the NASA’s Kepler mission.
Kepler is a space borne telescope designed to survey distant stars to determine the prevalence of Earth like planets.

March 13th -  Our Changing Sun. Presented by Ken Legal a member of STAR.


April 10th - Preparations and Ideas for Astronomy Day.  Review of the Night Sky Network


May 8th - Astronomy Equipment and/or Book, show & tell


June 12th - Celestial Navigation. Presented by Sarah Waters


July 10th - Famous Astronomers of the 17th Century. presented by Rich Brady


Special Event: The ASTRA Picnic will be held on the 16th of Aug at the Gamba’s house. The cost will
be $8.00 per adult; kids 16 and under are free. Start time will be 3:00 pm. The Gamba’s will be supplying the
basics (hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, soda, etc.) People can bring their favorite dish and drink. Just call (732-
270-1660) or email (rich@estitches.com or Peggi@estitches.com) the Gamba’s with what dish you are bringing
so there isn’t too much duplication. Time is short, so please get your money into the Gamba’s quickly.

Guest Speaker – Astronaut: Astronaut Robert Cenker will recount the Space Shuttle
Columbia STS 61-C mission. Meeting will be in the Technology Building (#13).

November 13th -Presentation by Phil Zollner on his experiences during a Solar Eclipse


December 11th - Elections and Annual Awards Meeting
